A música sempre o cativou desde sempre. As primeiras memórias musicais que ele tem são os cantos de ninar do pai dele e seu violão. A coleção de discos do pai dele tinha todo tipo de Jazz, Clássico, Folk Irlandês, Beatles, Elvis e discos de Rock Folk Finlandês. Ele começou a cantar aos onze anos e a bagunçar o violão do seu pai aos doze. Aos treze ela já estava em sua minha primeira banda da escola, chamada "Sabotage" (não é coindicência, o Black Sabbath já era grande influência juntamente com a fase Dio do Rainbow), onde ele tocava baixo e cantava. Punk Rock e Metal .
Guiado pela fagulha musical, aos quinze anos ele deixou Tervo e foi para Kuopio, uma cidade vizinha com 80.000 pessoas. Lá começou a frequentar uma escola musical no Ensino Médio para estudar violão clássico, voz e teoria por três anos. De lá continuou para a Oulunkylä Pop e o Conservatório de Jazz em Helsinki por mais um ano e meio, mas eventualmente caíu fora quando o Tarot conseguiu um contrato para seu primeiro disco e turnê, em 1986 (sendo o Tarot a primeira banda "profissional" montada por ele , seu irmão Zac e o baterista Pecu Cinnari, em 1984).
Tuomas e Ewo, da King Foo Entertainment, ligaram para ele em uma noite de Novembro em 2001. Eles o convidaram para entrar no Nightwish e ele sem pensar duas vezes aceitou a propósta já que o ex baixista do Nightwish ( Sami Vänskä ) avia sido demitido da banda.
Após a entrada dele no Nightwish, o compositor Tuomas Holopainen escreveu muitos sons para serem duetos entre Hietala e a ex-vocalista da banda, Tarja Turunen. Um dos duetos mais famosos dos dois foi a regravação de Phantom of the Opera, do álbum "Century Child".

Hietala esteve muito envolvido na produção do, Dark Passion Play, sexto álbum do Nightwish; ele foi o cantor pricipal de vários sons como "Bye Bye Beautiful" e "7 Days to the Wolves", Hietala ainda fez Backing Vocal nas faixas "Meadows of Heaven" e "Cadence of Her Last Breath", e escreveu a música "The Islander" na qual foi o principal vocalista; o sétimo álbum da banda, Imaginaerum, será lançado em 30 de novembro de 2011.
