Ronald James Padavona (Portsmouth, 10 de julho de 1942 — Houston, 16 de maio de 2010) foi um músico e compositor de heavy metal norte-americano, famoso como vocalista das bandas Rainbow e Black Sabbath. É considerado o maior vocalista da história do Heavy Metal, o que lhe rendeu o apelido de "Rei do Metal", além de ter sido o responsável por associar a famosa Mão Chifrada ao Heavy Metal.
Ronnie adotou o sobrenome "Dio" em homenagem a um mafioso italiano, Johnny Dio. Ainda na escola, formou com colegas a banda de rockabilly.Vegas Kings que, após mudar de nome várias vezes (sendo chamada de Ronnie and the Rumbles, Ronnie and the Redcaps, Ronnie Dio and the Prophets, The Eletric Elves e The Elves), finalmente tornou-se conhecida como ELF.
Em meados dos anos 70 foi chamado para cantar no Rainbow de Ritchie Blackmore (ex-Deep Purple), onde gravou quatro álbuns. Após deixar o Rainbow, foi convidado pelo guitarrista Tony Iommi para ocupar o posto de vocalista no Black Sabbath, permanecendo com a banda até 1983.
No mesmo ano, lança um álbum solo, Holy Diver. Nele estão Vinny Appice, que também tinha saído do Sabbath e acompanhou Dio, seu antigo companheiro de Rainbow Jimmy Bain e o guitarrista Vivian Campbell (atual Def Leppard). Holy Diver foi muito bem aceito e deixou clássicos como a faixa-título, "Stand Up and Shout", "Don’t Talk to Strangers" e a mais famosa "Rainbow in the Dark".
Embalado com o sucesso, Dio solta mais um álbum em 1984 chamado The Last in Line. Também muito bem aceito pelo público e pela crítica, trazia a mesma fórmula de Holy Diver. Foi este álbum que levou a banda a uma enorme turnê mundial seguida do seu primeiro vídeo oficial. Os músicos são os mesmos do trabalho anterior, com adição do tecladista chamado Claude Schenell.
Em 1985 lança Sacred Heart, cuja turnê rendeu um vídeo ao vivo, Sacred Heart Live.
Em 1986 sai um EP ao vivo chamado Intermission com seis músicas onde as que se destacam são "King of Rock and Roll", "We Rock" e "Rainbow in the Dark" e uma faixa inédita de estúdio "Time To Burn" apresentando o novo guitarrista Craig Goldie que substituiu Vivian Campbell durante a turnê de Sacred Heart.
Em 1987 é lançado Dream Evil, e Dio só volta a aparecer em 1990 com Lock up the Wolves. A formação da banda é totalmente diferente das passadas. Os músicos são Rowan Robertson (guitarra), Simon Wright (bateria), Teddy Cook (baixo) e Jens Johansson (teclados).
Em 1992 Dio volta ao Black Sabbath e grava mais um álbum chamado Dehumanizer. Neste mesmo ano sai uma coletânea intitulada Diamonds The Best Of com vários clássicos da banda Dio.
No ano seguinte, Dio lança Strange Highways, seguindo a mesma linha de Dehumanizer. Em 1996 sai Angry Machines, com uma banda composta por Tracy G (guitarra), Jeff Pilson (baixo) e Vinny Appice (bateria).
Vieram ao Brasil para tocar junto com Bruce Dickinson, Jason Bonham Band e Scorpions no final de 1997. Neste mesmo ano saiu uma coletânea chamada Anthology. Em 1998 sai um CD duplo ao vivo chamado Dio’s Inferno - The Last in Live, que traz clássicos como, "Holy Diver", "Don’t Talk to Strangers", "The Last in Line", e "The Mob Rules" (homônima do disco do Black Sabbath), "Mistreated" (do Deep Purple) e "Catch the Rainbow" (do Rainbow) entre outras. Algo relativo à volta do Rainbow havia sido mencionado mas com a morte do baterista Cozy Powell, a notícia permaneceu apenas como boato.
Em 2000 lança Magica, um álbum conceitual que traz de volta o estilo clássico de Dio de compor, com letras sobre magia, dragões e bruxas. Sua banda contou com a volta do magnífico Craig Goldie (guitarra), o seu fiel escudeiro Jimmy Bain (baixo), Simon Wright (bateria) e Scott Waren (teclados). No final de 2001 Goldy decide deixar a banda alegando problemas familiares e para seu lugar é recrutado o guitarrista Doug Aldrich. Com novo line up, Dio entra em estúdio e em 2002 sai Killing the Dragon que procurou repetir a mesma forma do anterior porém com um pouco mais de rapidez e peso.
Em 2003 sai seu primeiro DVD oficial, Evil Or Divine e, em 2004, o último trabalho de estúdio, Master Of The Moon, que contou com o seguinte line-up: Ronnie James Dio no vocal, Craig Goldy na guitarra, Jeff Pilson no baixo, Simon Wright na bateria e Scott Warren nos teclados; porém, quem ocupou o posto de baixista na turnê foi Rudy Sarzo.
Em 15 de julho de 2006 Dio voltou ao Brasil, desta vez trazendo a tour Holy Diver Live em comemoração aos 23 anos de lançamento do clássico disco Holy Diver.
Em 2007 reuniu-se com os antigos companheiros de Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler e Vinny Appice, para excursionarem na promoção do álbum Black Sabbath - The Dio Years. Neste álbum estão grandes clássicos como "Neon Knights", "Die Young", "Falling Off The Edge Of The World", "The Mob Rules" e três músicas novas compostas especialmente para este disco: "The Devil Cried", "Ear in the Wall" e "Shadow of the Wind".
Dio também ajudou a criar uma das maiores tradições do heavy metal. No documentário "Metal - a headbangers journey" ele é citado como o criador do Maloik, o "chifrinho" feito com as mãos, imitado por fãs do gênero no mundo inteiro. Segundo ele, o símbolo era usado por sua avó italiana, e servia para afastar (ou provocar) o "mau olhado".
Para promoverem a coletânea os quatro se reuniram sob o nome Heaven and Hell para uma turnê mundial de um ano. Um dos shows em Nova Iorque da turnê é gravado e lançado sob o nome de Live From Radio City Music Hall, dando uma "geral" em toda a discografia de Dio com o Black Sabbath. Em 2008, é lançado um box set com toda a discografia de Dio à frente do Black Sabbath, chamado The Rules Of Hell, e os músicos anunciam que entrariam em estúdio para gravarem um novo álbum, batizado de The Devil You Know, lançado em abril de 2009..
Em 25 de novembro de 2009, Wendy, sua esposa e empresária, anunciou que ele havia sido diagnosticado com câncer de estômago..
Em março de 2010, Wendy publicou uma atualização online sobre sua condição:
Dio iniciou o tratamento com a doença ainda no estágio inicial e havia diminuído o número de shows nos últimos meses. Em 4 de maio de 2010, o Heaven and Hell anunciou que eles estavam cancelando todas as apresentações que ocorreriam no verão por causa da condição de saúde de Dio.
Dio morreu às 7:45 da manhã (horário local) de 16 de maio de 2010, de acordo com as fontes oficiais...

Ronald James Padavona (Portsmouth, July 10, 1942 - Houston, May 16, 2010) was a musician and composer of American heavy metal, famous as frontman of the bands Rainbow and Black Sabbath. It is considered the greatest singer in the history of Heavy Metal, which earned him the nickname "King of Metal", and has been responsible for associating the famous horn Hand to Heavy Metal.
Ronnie took the name "Dio" in honor of an Italian mobster Johnny Dio. While at school, he formed with fellow band Kings rockabilly.Vegas that after changing its name several times (being called Ronnie and the Rumbles, Ronnie and the Redcaps, Ronnie Dio and the Prophets, The Elves and The Electric Elves) eventually became known as ELF.
In the mid 70's was called to sing at the Rainbow Ritchie Blackmore (ex Deep Purple), where he recorded four albums. After leaving Rainbow, was invited by guitarist Tony Iommi to occupy the position of lead singer in Black Sabbath, remaining with the band until 1983.
In the same year, launched a solo album, Holy Diver. In it are Vinny Appice, who also had left the Sabbath and Dio followed, his former companion of Rainbow Jimmy Bain and guitarist Vivian Campbell (Def Leppard current). Holy Diver was very well accepted and made such classics as the title track, "Stand Up and Shout," "Do not Talk to Strangers" and the most famous "Rainbow in the Dark."
Packed with success, Dio released another album in 1984 called The Last in Line. Also very well received by audiences and critics, he brought the same formula of Holy Diver. It was this album that took the band to a huge world tour followed by his first official video. The musicians are the same as previous work, with the addition of keyboardist named Claude Schenell.
In 1985 launches Sacred Heart, whose tour yielded a live video, Sacred Heart Live.
In 1986 comes a live EP called Intermission where six songs that stand out are "King of Rock and Roll," "We Rock" and "Rainbow in the Dark" and a new song studio "Time To Burn" featuring the new guitarist who replaced Craig Goldie Vivian Campbell during a tour of Sacred Heart.

In late 2001 Goldy decides to leave the band citing family and its place is recruited guitarist Doug Aldrich. With the new line up, Dio comes into the studio and out in 2002 Killing the Dragon who tried to repeat the same way as before but with a little more speed and weight.
In 2003 their first official DVD comes out, Evil Or Divine, and in 2004, the last studio album, Master Of The Moon, which featured the following line-up: Ronnie James Dio on vocals, Craig Goldy on guitar, Jeff Pilson in bass, Simon Wright on drums and Scott Warren on keyboards, but those who held the post of the tour was bassist Rudy Sarzo.
On July 15, 2006 Dio returned to Brazil, this time bringing the Holy Diver Live tour celebrating 23 years of launching the classic Holy Diver album.
In 2007 he met with fellow former Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice for excursionarem in promoting the album Black Sabbath - The Dio Years. In March 2010, Wendy released an online update on his condition:
"Ronnie made his seventh session of chemotherapy, another CT scan and another endoscopy, and the results are good - the main tumor has shrunk considerably, and our visits to the clinic in Houston are now every 3 weeks rather than every two weeks . "- Wendy
Dio began treatment with the disease in the early stages and had reduced the number of shows in recent months. On May 4, 2010, Heaven and Hell announced that they were canceling all performances that occur in the summer because of the health status of Dio.
Dio died at 7:45 am (local time) of May 16, 2010, according to official sources ...
