É o vocalista e antigo tecladista da banda Sonata Arctica. Nascido na Finlândia, fundou o grupo em 1996, depois de estudar teclado por dois anos e de ter cantado informalmente em festivais locais. Ele assumiu ambos, vocal e teclado, mas depois de lançar o primeiro álbum da banda, dedicou-se somente ao canto.
Em 2001 foi convidado pela banda Nightwish para gravar a nova versão da música "Astral Romance", que apareceu na EP Over the Hills and Far Away.
