Seus grandes ídolos na infância eram cantores de soul como Whitney Houston e Aretha Franklin, e nessa época sua família achava que seria o caminho seguido pela garota, porém, aos quinze anos, Tarja mudou-se para Savonlinna, onde estudou na Savonlinna Senior Secondary School of Art and Music, onde passou a ter aulas de canto lírico e seguiu focando-se nesse estilo. No mesmo ano, ela se apresentou pela primeira vez para mais de mil pessoas como solista em um concerto de Natal.
