Mais conhecido como Chaim Weitz , ( Gene Simmons) nasceu Haifa, 25 de agosto de 1949 . Ele é vocalista , baixista e fundador da banda que muitos apelidavam de Hard Rock Kiss...
Simmons é mais conhecido pelo seu apelido "The Demon". Contrariamente a muitas personalidades do rock, Simmons afirma "nunca ter consumido drogas, nunca ter fumado nem nunca ter bebido álcool demais em toda a sua vida. É famoso pelo seu jeito demoníaco durante os shows, é também famoso por seu baixo em forma de machado, Axe Bass. Naturalizado norte-americano, é um ex-professor primário. Dentre suas melhores composições estão Rock and Roll All Night, Shout It Out Loud, Chritine Sixteen, I Love It Loud, War Machine, entre outros hits. Simmons também estreou o seu próprio reality show "Gene Simmons: Family Jewels" exibido na A&E.
Chaim Weitz (que posteriormente mudaria seu nome para Eugene Klein) nasceu em Haifa, Israel e mudou-se com a mãe para os Estados Unidos quando tinha nove anos, indo morar em Queens, Nova Iorque (durante a Segunda Guerra sua mãe esteve num campo de concentração).
Gene aprendeu inglês lendo histórias em quadrinhos de super heróis, livros de ficção científica e filmes, particularmente os de terror (além de inglês, ele também fala hebraico, alemão e húngaro). Formou-se pelo Richmond College e foi professor de inglês no Harlem espanhol.
Ele aprendeu a tocar guitarra, mas preferiu o baixo porque, segundo ele, existiam muitos guitarristas, e queria ser diferente.
Um amigo, Steve Coronel, o apresentou a Stanley Eisen (mais tarde, Paul Stanley). De começo eles não se gostaram, mas depois se enturmaram e juntos fundaram uma das mais importantes bandas de Hard Rock e Heavy Metal do mundo: Kiss, em janeiro de 1973. Perfeccionista, entra de cabeça nos negócios da banda, encarando a fantasia e explorando (e bem) o marketing dela. Mulherengo convicto, tem centenas de polaroid nuas das garotas com quem (segundo ele, mais de 5 mil) transou na estrada. Namorou as cantoras Cher e Diana Ross.
Mora com a atriz e playmate Shannon Tweed há mais de 23 anos, com quem tem dois filhos, (Sophie Simmons e Nicholas Simmons).
Depois do sucesso da banda nos anos 70/80, Gene começa a descobrir novas bandas. Descobriu o Van Halen e Cinderella. Ele retira a máscara em 1983 com o lançamento do álbum "Lick it Up" a ficou assim até 1996 quando houve a "Reunion Tour" com todos os membros originais do Kiss. Na década de 80 Gene tentou a carreira de ator estrelando filmes como "Runaway" (de 1985, com Tom Selleck, da série Magnun), "Wanted Dead or Alive", entre outros.
Gene resolveu ampliar seus horizontes e passou a fazer várias participações em filmes e séries (fez o papel de um traficante na série Third Watch), produziu novas bandas (Keel foi uma delas), desenhos animados, sua própria revista, etc. Nesta época deixou o Kiss um pouco de lado, coisa do que ele se arrependeu futuramente.
É famoso mundialmente por sua gigantesca língua e nos palcos chama a atenção por sua demoníaca figura, por cuspir fogo, vomitar sangue, além de tocar seu baixo em formato de machado. Tem sua própria revista "Gene Simmons Tongue Magazine", seu próprio selo (Simmons Record), desenho animado "My Dad the Rock Star". Em dezembro de 2001 lançou seu livro, KISS And Make-up, onde conta coisas inesperadas da banda.
Em agosto de 2006 estreou seu reality show "Gene Simmons: Family Jewels" no canal A&E, e devido ao seu sucesso, teve uma segunda temporada onde entre muitas coisas mostra a cirurgia plástica a que se submeteu. Em 2009 promoveu um leilão beneficente para uma instituição onde o produto que foi arrematado por quinze mil dólares era uma pedra retirada cirurgicamente de um de seus rins.
