Slipknot é uma banda de metal norte-americana formada em Des Moines, Iowa. É constituída por nove membros, sendo eles atualmente Sid Wilson, Joey Jordison, Donnie Steele, Chris Fehn, James Root, Craig Jones, Shawn Crahan, Mick Thomson e Corey Taylor.
O "núcleo" da banda formou-se em 1991, quando o baterista Shawn Crahan, o vocalista Anders Colsefini, baixista Paul Gray e o guitarrista Patrick Neuwirth formaram a banda PAINFACE. Pat, como era chamado o guitarrista, também ajudou Shawn na sua primeira banda (heads on the wall) que também tinha como guitarrista Quan Nong.
Em Setembro de 1995, a banda "The Pale Ones" foi criada com Shawn Crahan na bateria, Gray no baixo, Anders Colsefini nos vocais e o guitarrista Steele. Joey Jordison se aderiu a banda pouco depois, tendo o papel de baterista e, posteriormente, transferido Crahan para a percussão. O Download Festival 2009, que começou a partir dos dias 12, 13 e 14 de Junho no Donington Park, em Leicestershire e Inglaterra, o Slipknot foi anunciado como manchete do palco principal no sábado. O Slipknot que recentemente o turnê All Hope Is Gone World Tour seria terminada no final deste ano, que entrou em relação a um ano inteiro, passando por numerosos países. A polícia da cidade de Urbandale, no Iowa, afirmou que Paul Gray, baixista da banda Slipknot, foi encontrado morto em um quarto de hotel. A informação é do jornal local “KCCI”.
O corpo de Gray foi encontrado por volta das 11h da manhã (horário local) no hotel Marriott da cidade. Não havia sinais de crime, mas a polícia ainda esta fazendo uma investigação completa das razões da morte do músico. O corpo do baixista vai passar por uma autópsia é exame toxicológico.
Os sete integrantes do Slipknot se emocionaram bastante ao se pronunciarem pela primeira vez sobre a morte do companheiro em entrevista coletiva concedida no dia 25 de maio de 2010. Sem máscaras, eles falaram sem discurso e não responderam a perguntas.

In late 1998, Slipknot returned to the recording studio to work on their debut album. In early 1999, guitarist Brainard decided to leave the band due to personal reasons. In July 2001, the album was named Slipknot as one of "50 heaviest albums of all time."
After the success of their debut, Slipknot decided to enter the studio again for a second album. Until then, the band had created a huge fan club base, and expectations for their follow up album was great. They returned to the studio in early 2001 to work on a new album. Iowa, the band's second album with Roadrunner Records, was released on August 28, 2001. Jason Birchmeier of Allmusic said "It's really all you could ask for in a Slipknot album, and then some," and David Fricke of Rolling Stone called the album "the first great record of the nu metal era." It was also a commercial success, peaking at number three on Billboard, and number one in the UK as album chart. In mid 2001 the band once again with the Ozzfest tour, and performed the Kill The Industry in which he was touring in support of the album Iowa.
